Setting a laundry day in the diary for when the family gets home from holiday

Coming home from a holiday is a happy moment, but the suitcases are usually full of washing. Without a plan, the bags stay in the hallway for days and the pile only seems to grow. A set date for tackling the laundry takes away that nagging feeling. It turns a vague chore into something that has a proper place in the week.

Choose a day soon after you return and put it in the family diary before you even leave. Ideally it is the first full day at home, when everyone is still in a holiday mood and willing to help. Do not pick the very moment you walk through the door, because everyone will be tired. Give yourselves a little breathing space, then start the next morning.

Sorting before washing

Empty the suitcases onto the floor or a large table and sort the items into piles. Separate the clothes into whites, colours, delicates and anything that needs special care. Put damp towels and swimming things in a pile of their own, as they should be washed first. Once the piles are ready, the whole job looks a lot less daunting.

Start the first load as early as you can, and keep the machine busy through the day. While one load is running, hang the previous one out to dry or tuck it into the dryer. If the weather is fine, the washing line saves time and gives the clothes a fresh smell. On a wet day, use a clothes airer near a window and open it a little for air.

Share the work between everyone in the house, so the job is not left to one person. Children can match socks, fold towels and carry clean clothes to the right bedroom. Adults can deal with the machine and the ironing. Put on some music, and the afternoon soon turns into a team effort rather than a burden.

While the machine hums, empty the suitcases completely and store them away. Check the pockets of bags and jackets for crumpled paper, sweet wrappers or sand. Once everything is clean and put away, the holiday is properly over and normal life can begin again. A planned laundry day makes that return feel calm instead of chaotic. It is a small habit, but it makes every trip end on a tidy note.
